Model Quantization & Tuning

Adapt generative AI to your confidentiality, computing and domain requirements.

Quantization reduces model weight precision to lower storage and memory requirements. Tuning adapts selected model behavior to a domain. Together, they offer options for deploying AI within available hardware and operating constraints.

Why It Matters

Fit model deployment to the business environment

An on-premises or private-cloud deployment may be appropriate when data-handling requirements limit external services. Model size, hardware capacity, response time and output quality then need to be balanced. Confidentiality alone does not require the same hosting arrangement for every project.

How It Works

The approach

Quantization represents model weights at lower precision, such as 4-bit rather than 16-bit. Tuning methods such as LoRA train a smaller set of additional parameters instead of updating every weight. QLoRA combines low-rank adaptation with a quantized base model. These methods address different deployment needs.

Simple calculation of the memory needed for the weights of a 70-billion-parameter model: about 140 GB in 16-bit format and about 35 GB when quantized to 4 bits. LoRA keeps the base model weights frozen and trains only small additional matrices.QUANTIZATION70B-parameter model: weight memory (simple calculation)16-bit (FP16)About 140 GBQuantized to 4-bitAbout 35 GB (one quarter)LoRABase model frozen; only small added matrices are trainedBase model weightsFrozen (not trained)+Added matricesTrained on your data
Memory reduction through quantization, and adaptation with LoRA (conceptual diagram, simple calculation)
  1. Define requirements: Agree data boundaries, hardware, workload and target response behavior.
  2. Select candidate models: Compare model capabilities, licensing and deployment requirements.
  3. Adapt where useful: Evaluate quantization and domain tuning separately or together.
  4. Test the configuration: Measure task quality, memory use and response time on representative workloads.
Benefits

Business value

  • Lower weight-memory requirements

Quantization can reduce the memory used to store weights; total runtime memory also includes other components.

  • Targeted domain adaptation

Tuning can align terminology, style and output format with the task.

  • More deployment options

Evaluate configurations for local or private environments when required by the project.

Considerations

Application considerations

  • Lower precision can affect quality. Speed gains depend on hardware and inference software; smaller weights do not guarantee faster responses. The diagram shows a simplified weight-memory calculation, not total runtime memory.
  • Use current reference sources through RAG for changing factual information where appropriate. Tuning does not replace knowledge maintenance or deployment security controls.
